Sarasota Public School System – A Quality Education 

The Sarasota County School District is one of the highest performing school districts in the state of Florida.  The district has been designated as an “A” district by the Florida Department of Education, with 95 percent of the elementary schools and 84 percent of the high schools receiving “A” or “B” grades in 2009.  It is among 15 percent of the U.S. districts to receive the “What Parents Want” award. It has been recognized for outstanding arts  education by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  

When we were thinking of moving to Florida our number one concern was educating our boys. 
The Sarasota School System had what we wanted making Sarasota our #1 choice to raise our family.  The following information and facts have been taken directly from the Sarasota County Schools web site under their “Facts at your Fingertips” brochure from the front of the home page.

 ·         The district is the largest employer in Sarasota County.  Instructional staff is 2,755 Support staff is 2,258 and 211 Administrators for a total of 5,224.

·         Annual budget  for 2009 - 2010 is  $404,075,131

·         Total Enrollment for the district is 41,501 which is broken down into: Elementary Schools 18,593, Middle Schools 9,489 and High Schools 13,428

·         The graduation rate for Sarasota County students is at an all-time high of 86%

·         Sarasota County students consistently rank among the top 10 districts statewide in FCAT reading, writing, and math scores.

·         District SAT scores were higher than 2009 state averages by 26 points (math), 23 points (reading) and 21 points (writing) and higher than national averages by 9 points (math), 19 points (reading), and 8 points (writing).

·         More than 99% of the districts 400 million dollar operating budget is used directly for schools or school support: less than 1% is used for district-level administration. 

Pine View School for intellectually gifted students in grades 2-12 consistently has one of the highest percentages of National Merit Scholarship finalists in Florida, was rated the sixth best high school in America by U.S. News & World Report in 2007 and is regularly ranked as the highest performing school in the state grading process. 

Each Middle School offers exploratory courses: students select a major area of interest in eighth grade to help them plan for high school and beyond. 

All High Schools are organized around Small Learning Communities that help students connect to a peer group with similar interests and career aspirations.
 

The district also offers a school choice program for students who wish to attend a school outside their districted area.  20 different Sarasota Schools have received the state “Five Star Award” for exemplary community involvement programs.
