Siesta Key Sandcastle Competition

This past weekend was the 2^nd annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Contest, held on the world famous #1 rated Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida. Siesta Key Beach was recently chosen as the #1 Beach in America by Dr. Stephen Leatherman (a.k.a.) Dr. Beach. Dr. Leatherman is the Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research.

This has become an annual organized event with thousands of spectators coming in to watch professional sand sculptors show off their trade with proceeds benefiting sea turtle research, conservation and rehabilitation programs at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium located in Sarasota. What a great event this has become with live music on the beach, food and vendors with local artist, environmental education by Mote Marine Laboratories, and great photo opportunities with these magnificent Sandcastles and their creators.

As you will see from the pictures below the quality of the Siesta Key Sand which is 99% quartz crystal makes it ideal for sand sculptures. And yes you can go ahead and try this on your own at home but you will find much better results if you try this on Siesta Key Beach. So come on down to Siesta Key and enjoy the sugary-white sand, aqua-blue waters and our year round warm temperatures.
